Clinton Wesley Stine, known since childhood as “Dick,” passed away on June 4, 2024 at the age of 95. Dick was born on a farm in South Dakota, the seventh of eight children of Flora and Clarence Stine.
Dick is survived by three daughters Catherine, Mary, and Deborah, and grandchildren Katlyn, Daniel, Todd, Amy, and Chloe, and three great grandchildren.
After having graduated from high school early, and with the required permission of one of his parents, Dick joined the army at 17. He served for two years, spending almost all of that time in Japan as part of the occupational forces at the end of World War II.
After discharge from the army, Dick returned to the Midwest and married Dona Logan in 1949. In 1955 they moved with two young daughters from Minnesota to Southern California, where Dick lived for the rest of his life. Dick received a BA from Morehead State Teachers’ College; an MA from Cal State Los Angeles and a EdD from the University of Southern California. He was an expert on the funding of public education.
After teaching high school for a few years Dick became an administrator at El Camino College in Torrance from 1960 until 1975, ending his time there as its Vice President of Business. He became the President of Antelope Valley College in Lancaster in 1976, serving until 1986.
His philanthropic endeavors included a long association with the Rotary Club and the American Red Cross. He served as the Executive Director of the Antelope Valley Chapter of the Red Cross. He also held a national position with the Red Cross which required attendance of meetings in Washington DC.
A staunch liberal throughout his life, Dick ran for the California State Assembly in District 37 in 1982. He won the Democratic primary, but ultimately lost to the Republican candidate in the strongly Republican district.
Dick was an avid golfer into his late 80’s.
Later in life, Dick married Susan Sparks and made a home with her in Sun City for many years. Susan passed away in 2023.
