Sheila, the daughter of Sol and Eleanor Schwartz, was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on December 8, 1935, the oldest of 3 Siblings, including her sister Elizabeth (Libbe) and brother Mark (Moishe). She graduated CCNY in 1957 to begin a 48-year teaching career, specializing in K-6 grades, the most formative years for a child. She loved it and was exceptionally good at it, as attested to by hundreds if not thousands of former students who think she was the best teacher they ever had!
Sheila met the love of her life, Irv Rubin, on a blind date while in college, and married him within 9 months of their first date. It was truly love at first sight, and led to a 55-year marriage made in heaven. They were each other’s best friend throughout life.
Sheila was mother to four children, all born in New York City: Michael (Sonia), Daniel (Kimberly), Wendy (Curtiss), and Jonathan (Judith), and beloved Bubbie to 11 Grandchildren: Justin, Sara, Joshua, David, Rachel, Noa, Olivia, Naomi, Alexis, Sam, and Aaron.
Life took Sheila and Irv briefly to Phoenix, Arizona and ultimately Los Angeles, California in August of 1977, which became their permanent “home”.
Sheila taught in the public schools in New York City, and at Jewish schools in Phoenix and Los Angeles, with the last 20 years at Valley Beth Shalom Day School where she became an “institution” teaching kindergarten. Years after her retirement, when she attended Shabbat Services at VBS, it would take Sheila almost an hour to exit the building as countless former students lined up to spend time with her or just say hello and give her a hug.
Sheila was a phenomenal home entertainer, and loved nothing more than to invite family, friends, and friends of friends, to attend Shabbat or Pesach dinners, where she and Irv did all the cooking, prep, and clean up themselves. Shabbat Dinner at Mrs. Rubin’s was a favorite prize in the silent auctions at VBS fund raising events!
Sheila loved the arts and culture, traveling throughout the US and many exotic countries, spending hours in museums and art galleries, countless trips to the theatre and concerts, always with her partner Irv at her side. Nothing thrilled her more than taking one or more of her grandchildren on these outings. She attended classes on the arts and languages year after year until very late in life, loving to learn new things.
Her beloved Irv passed in 2012, and Sheila spent the remainder of her life focused on being involved with her children and grandchildren, wherever she was needed or whenever there was an “event” in their lives. Nothing in life was more important to Sheila than being “Mom” and “Bubbie” to her family.
Join us in celebrating and honoring her remarkable life.
