May 3, 1921 – February 19,2021.
Rachel (Rae) Wolff passed away after 99 ½ years of a good life. Born in Chicago to Maurice and Esther Kern as the middle of three sisters (Bernece and Jean). They grew up on the south side of Chicago enjoying the greater Ginsberg family clan. Rachel moved to Washington D.C. as a young woman to help in the WWII effort where she met her husband Leo Wolff who was serving in the Army. They had four children in Chicago before moving to Baltimore for a short time, and then settling in the San Fernando Valley of LA as part of the aerospace boom of the 50’s and 60’s to raise their family. She is preceded in death by her husband Leo and survived by her four children Carol (husband Rod), Debbie (husband Ali), Amy (husband Marc), and David (wife Sharon), five grandchildren Chloe, Hannah, Zachary, Kellie, and Christie, and three great grandchildren Rachel, Michael, and Gabriel.
Throughout her life Rachel enjoyed a rich social life of couple’s bridge and poker dinner parties, ladies bridge every Monday afternoon, and bridge games with friends and at the bridge club. She filled in her week with a Mahjong game and watched Jeopardy every evening. It was bridge, Mahj, crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, magazines and books that kept her sharp to her final days. Rachel and Leo were avid theater and symphony goers, and national and world travelers after retirement. In the early years in Los Angeles she enjoyed taking her kids to Zuma and Topanga beaches in the summertime introducing them to the wonders of the ocean. She worked part time in the schools and making table pad patterns while raising her family, and was a long-time volunteer with the National Council of Jewish Women.
Rachel will be known for her honesty, sense of humor, cooking, keen sense of direction around the LA freeways and boulevards, and acceptance of us all. She will be missed by those fortunate enough to have been touched by her long and rich life. She will rest at sea with Leo knowing that she was loved deeply by her family and friends. There will be virtual memorial on March 21, 2021 to honor her life. Donations in her memory can be sent to the National Council of Jewish Women LA www.ncjwla.org or the Valley Jewish Community Center www.valleyjcc.org.
