Jeanne M Glazer

Jeanne Marie Rogel Glazer passed away on December 27, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19, at the age of 75. Her spirit was vibrant and steadfast despite enduring Parkinson’s and Dystonia for nearly 25 years. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Vincent and Lillian Rogel (nee Bousi), the youngest of three children. Jeanne attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio, from 1964-1967, serving as head cheerleader and graduating with a BS degree in Education. She later earned Masters degrees in Deaf and Special Education from Cal State University Northridge where she met her teaching mentor, who became her dear friend for the next 45 years.

Following her college graduation, on vacation with a friend in Hawaii, Jeanne met her future husband, Howard Glazer. She moved away from her family in Ohio to Los Angeles CA, where she and Howard were married in 1968.

Jeanne and Howard bought their home in Northridge, CA in 1969, where they spent many happy years together raising their children, Stephen and Susanne. Jeanne and Howard loved-- and were loved by-- their Vintage Street community. Their friends and neighbors were like family, celebrating good times and providing support during difficult times. When Howard passed away due to Leukemia in 1986, Jeanne relied on the incredible support from her sister-in-law Sibyl & husband Rich, her brother Jimmy, the Vintage Street family, and her own resilience. Despite the challenges that she faced, Jeanne remained a pillar of strength, caring for friends and neighbors, committed to the environment, and an active member in CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). She was recognized for her service to the community when she was selected to carry the Olympic torch in the 2002 Olympics opening ceremony.

Jeanne began her career in Special Education at Hart Street School in Canoga Park and consistently worked as a sign language interpreter with the National Center on Deafness and at Cal State University Northridge for over 25 years. She was the marketing and creative force for Guardian Home Products, a company that Howard started and ran for more than a decade. With her children in high school, Jeanne began a new chapter in her career as a Special Education teacher at Granada Hills High School. She retired from Granada in 2005.

Following her retirement, Jeanne’s health declined due to Parkinson’s and Dystonia. She came to rely on Rosemary, her beloved caretaker of 15 years. Jeanne felt fortunate to have such a kind and compassionate caretaker and companion.

Jeanne epitomized love, kindness, and strength of character. She raised her children to be respectful and appreciative of people, animals, and the environment. She enjoyed short trips to the mountains and desert, longer trips around the world, and loved to spend time with her 5 grandchildren.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, and her husband. She is survived by her children, her grandchildren, her sister-in-law & husband, her nephews & nieces, and cousins. She will be missed forever by her children, her family and friends.

Due to the prevalence of COVID and the risks of gathering, Jeanne’s immediate family plans to hold an online service later in January. In lieu of flowers, donations to Children of Deaf Adults, Inc. (CODA International - Memorial Fund Form) or the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation
