He was born on December 26, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Clarence and Oleita (Faley) Hatfield.
Marshall proudly served on the USS Minneapolis (CA-36) in the south Pacific during World War II. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in physical chemistry in 1949 and that same year married Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Richards, who passed away in 2011. He took a position with 3M in St. Paul where he worked for 37 years. Starting in central research, Marshall completed his career at 3M as a divisional vice-president. After his retirement in 1987, he served in several different positions on the board of the Minnesota Historical Society, including president. He was instrumental in raising funds for the completion of the new history center. Marshall also served on the boards of several local colleges.
Marshall and Liz enjoyed many winters in Honolulu, during which time he also became very involved with the Hawaiian Historical Society, the Settlement at Kalaupapa on Molikaii, and working on recognition for Mother Marianne Cope.
After Liz passed away, Marshall most enjoyed the monthly visits with his son Steve, frequent stops at the 617 and Rudi’s Redeye Grill in White Bear Lake and Tria Restaurant near his residence at Waverly Gardens in North Oaks.
Marshall was preceded in death by, his wife Liz; parents; and sister, Patricia.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Saunders; son Stephen (Carol); grandchildren, Matthew (David), Taylor (Kelly), G’len, Deirdre (Tyler) and Erik; great-grandchildren Delaney, Ella and Carson; brother-in-law Roy Richards Jr.; nieces Paula and Janet; nephews Mike (Kathy) and David.
Funeral and interment will be on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home (2250 St. Anthony Blvd, Minneapolis, MN)
Followed by a reception at Tria Restaurant, (5959 Centerville Road, North Oaks, MN)
Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Historical Society.
