John grew up in Hendricks, MN, and after high school graduation he attended Augsburg College for one year, then served in the US Navy as a musician. Upon return to Minnesota, he settled in the Twin Cities where he worked in banking and married Marlys Jean Dobie on October 26, 1957. He returned to school at the University of Minnesota, earning a Master’s in business education. John taught at Eau Claire (WI) Technical School, Kellogg High School, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and North Hennepin Community College, where he also served in administration and retired as Associate Dean of Career Programs.
John was a faithful family man who was a great husband and father and took great pride in his eight grandchildren. He enjoyed skiing, golf, many types of music, traveling, and all things Norwegian. With his easy going and friendly demeanor, he made friends wherever he went.
John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Cleo and Donald, and sisters Evelyn and Lorraine. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marlys, sister Dolores Bies, son John (Rosemary) Hinsverk, daughters Jennie (Steve) Lodien and Amy (Steve) Sinclair, eight fantastic grandchildren Max, Gannon, Brooke, Callie, Paige (Luke), Lexi, Tori, Kati, and one great grandchild Eden.
A memorial service will be held at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 6180 Hwy 65, Fridley on Thursday, January 18. Visitation will begin at 10am, service at 11am, and lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to North Hennepin Community College Foundation or St. Philip’s Lutheran Church.
