Kathy Mary Sweeney, 74, passed away on November 18, 2024. A vibrant soul who touched the lives of everyone she met. She was known as Kathy to those who knew her well, and “the Mayor” to those who knew her even better.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband, William, her daughter, Katie and her husband Jason, and her son Michael and his wife Elyce and her cherished grandchildren, Jason, Joseph, Jake and John. She also leaves behind her brother Larry (predeceased by his wife Barbara) and sisters Ellen (Steve) and Mary (Kenneth)along with her many beloved nieces and nephews. Kathy’s family held a special place in her heart and she was quick to let those around her know – she loved fiercely and spoke of those she loved often.
Kathy had a love for her Irish heritage and the Irish step dance community, traveling around the world to watch Katie and her nieces, Leanne and Janie, compete. An active member in the community she always made her voice heard at Mount Sinai sporting events, especially lacrosse and football. The truth is she would have been passionate about just about anything if her kids were involved.
The community at St. Louis De Montfort is where Kathy may have made the biggest impact. Through her years of service to the Mount Sinai-Sound Beach-Miller Place community she touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark upon the place she called home.
Kathy was a proud graduate of Nazareth College and remains an ardent supporter, even attending her 50th reunion. She spoke highly of her time at checkers just to make enough money to afford some Genny Cream Ales.
Her warmth permeated even the harshest of exteriors and she had an uncanny ability to make those around her feel at ease. She rejoiced in the happiness of others and the unwavering love she showed for those who were fortunate enough to know her will be sorely missed.
