James P. Kenny, also known as Jim or Jimmy as Maryann called him, was a quiet, humble man that valued family and doing the right thing even when no one was looking. Born on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940, Jim was the second youngest born into an Irish, Catholic family with lots of children, 8 to be exact; Mary, Peggy, Bettyann, Buddy (Patrick), Joan, Tommy, and the youngest Terry.
Jim grew up in Rockaway Beach, and met the love of his life, Maryann, when he was 18 years old. Together they built a beautiful life in Seaford and welcomed five children into the world; Geralynn, Jimmy, Jean, Maureen, and Tommy. Raising a family of this size was no easy feat but Jim and Maryann always found a way to care for and raise good people who genuinely cared for others. To their delight, these children blessed them with an extension of their family; grandchildren. Jim loved his 13 grandchildren and you could always find one of them on his lap. Kenny, Andrew, Amanda, Noel, James, David, Grace, Joseph, Holly, Emily, Ruthie, Tommy, and Jameson. In 2005, Jim and Maryann moved to Mount Sinai and began the next chapter in their life, retirement.
Anyone who knew Jim knew his obsession with the NY Jets. Jim was a season ticket holder for over 40 years. His love of this team was next to none. If it was a Sunday during football season, you knew if you were watching the game with Jim, you needed to be in green.
Jim was a well-respected man with a passion for volunteer work. He spent countless hours devoting his time to Honor Flight Long Island, an organization that sends US Veterans to our nation’s capital. Jim was the driving force behind the “Mail Call” project that delivers mail from friends and loved ones to the veterans during their flight. His efforts coined the phrase “Mail Call—Love on Paper” and this is precisely what his initiative brought to each veteran.
Jim passed on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, in Melbourne, Florida. How ironic that a man of such faith and passion would rise and die on Easter Sunday. Throughout their 61 years of marriage, Jim and Maryann lived by the mantra “ Live a Life with No Regrets” and this certainly proved true. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be honored and remembered. A celebration of James P. Kenny’s life will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at O.B. Davis Funeral Home 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, NY 11764 from 2;00 pm - 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm -9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at St. Louis de Montfort Church, 75 New York Avenue, Sound Beach, NY 11789 10:00 am.
