Elaine was a graduate of Concordia College, Bronxville and Valparaiso University, Indiana where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Elaine taught for several years prior to becoming a full-time mother, and later resumed working as a civilian employee of the Suffolk County Police Department.
