Gary Wayne Gray 1932 – 2017. Gary Wayne Gray was born April 24, 1932 to John Clifford and Lucetta Vera Penrose Gray in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sadly, Gary passed away on November 18, 2017 due to complications from injuries sustained in a severe car accident last December.
Gary was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. Gary graduated from South High School and the University of Utah with a degree in business. He served in The United States Air Force during the Korean War in Clovis, New Mexico. He met his sweetheart, Bonnie, of almost 60 years on a blind date at the Gold and Green Ball on February 16, 1957. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 3, 1958.
Gary worked at Zellerbach Paper Company, then taught art at Helper High School. Gary later went into purchasing for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Granite School District. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working for the Salt Lake Tribune.
Gary loved sports and was an avid golfer. He loved basketball, baseball, and football. In 1956, Gary helped his team win the LDS All Church Basketball Tournament. As a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, he was thrilled when his Cubs won the World Series last year. Gary also refereed and umpired basketball, football, and baseball for Granite School District and the LDS Church.
Gary loved the outdoors and fishing at Strawberry Reservoir during family trips to the cabin. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and playing games with the family. He was always working in the yard and helping neighbors. He will be missed by many.
Proceeded in death by parents John and Vera Gray, brother Darrell (Sal) Gray, sister Beverly (Floyd) Redding, daughter-in-law Deborah Gray, and great-grandson James Johnson.
Survived by his wife, Bonnie Bloomquist Gray and children Jeff Gray, Lori (Earl) Whitmore, Kelly (Donna) Gray, Glen Gray, Kristy (Steve) Arvanitas. Also survived by grandchildren Marie (Nate) Johnson, Kendra (Stephen) Aston, Spencer (Anna) Whitmore, Collin Whitmore, Ashley (Eric) Shupe, Adam Gray, Sydney Arvanitas, Nick (Ashlyn) Arvanitas, and Madeline Arvanitas; great grandchildren Maxwell Johnson, Oliver Johnson, Emma Aston, Samuel Aston, and George Whitmore.
A viewing to honor Gary will be held Sunday, November 26 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City UT. An additional viewing will be held in the Wilford Ward building on Monday, November 27 from 10:00 am to 10:45 am prior to the funeral. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am at the Wilford Ward building. The Wilford Ward building is located at 3179 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT.
