Dolores Rae Rogers

Dolores Niedert Rogers, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away January 23, 2014. Our mother just celebrated her 90th birthday being born on January 5, 1924 in Elgin, Illinois to Raymond Walter and Dorothy Becker Niedert. She was one of three children having an older sister, Betty and a younger brother, Wally. Her childhood was a happy one full of family traditions with cousins, close-knit neighborhood friends and achieving excellence in her academics. On December 1, 1945 she married Douglas B. Rogers, who had just returned from World War II. As a young mother she felt a need for more spirituality in her life and prayed earnestly and studied many religions. One morning, two LDS missionaries stopped by her home and shortly after she began to study their religious message. In time she and our father joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It then became our parents desire to live in Salt Lake. They moved to Sioux City, Iowa with Leslie and Grant to further our father's business experience during which Julie and Jane joined our family. Eventually our father was hired by ZCMI and we moved to Salt Lake in 1955. It was here that Caroline and Kent were born. Mom was a people's person. She could carry on a conversation with anyone and was a wonderful listener. She found great pleasure and happiness sending cards and writing letters. Those of us who went away to college received daily letters and we were only as far as Provo or Logan. Five of her children served missions and each one received countless correspondence from her letting us know she was thinking of us and what was going on at home. She attended all of our activities beginning in elementary school and continuing through college. Grandchildren received equal attention. Those who participated in athletics had the consistent attendance of their grandmother cheering them on whether they played in or out of town and whether it rained, snowed or was sunny. Mother was an example of refinement. She loved beautiful music, art, literature and created inviting and comfortable homes. Mom was fun. She took us to movies, concerts, operas, played games, and entertained us with her piano rendition of "Pennies from Heaven." A family trip always included teaching us songs from her and Dad's era and to this day we find delight in these very songs. She also enjoyed watching sports on TV especially cheering on BYU, U of U and the Jazz. Our mother had a deep sense of spirituality. She loved our Savior. Pictures of Him and family members adorned our homes. She was faithful in her church callings. As siblings we wish to share our deep gratitude to our sister Caroline, her husband and family for the constant tender care of her in their home this past year. Their devotion and love made mother feel loved and safe. She is survived by her friend and former husband, Douglas (Audrey) Rogers, her children, Leslie (Regnal) Garff, Grant (Cindy), Julie (Charles) Pierce, Jane, Caroline (Victor) Taylor, and Kent (Arrianna) Rogers, her sister Betty Maule and brother Wally, (Joanne) Niedert . She has been cherished by 29 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law Tom Maule and son-in-law Gale L. Bailey. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1st at 1:00 p.m. at the Olympus Stake Center, 2675 E. 4500 South.
