Arno was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and friend. His unfaltering love for his wife, Jan, whom he called his bride for their entire fifty-seven years together, was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Arno and Jan faced all the joys and sorrows of life, hand in hand, with strength, grace, and quiet dignity. His devoted care for her as her health struggles increased demonstrated just how much he cherished her.
When it came to his friends and those around him, he consistently placed others’ needs before his own. His actions spoke volumes, each gesture echoing his unwavering dedication to the well-being of those around him.
A tough exterior camouflaged Arno’s gentle and caring core. He loved going to the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City and the Hale Center Theatre with Jan and their many friends. If at all possible, Arno wouldn’t miss a swim meet or race event where any of his kids or grandkids were competing. His love of sports carried over to the University of Utah and he was an avid Ute fan.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Arno greatly enjoyed his ward family and his temple work.
Arno knew what he liked and was not shy about letting it be known. If bagels were suggested for a family get-together, his response would always be, “Where are the doughnuts?”
After Jan’s death, Arno adopted Mack, his handsome and faithful Husky companion. He said Mack made sure he was up and out getting exercise and keeping fit. He had to work off those doughnuts and Mack made sure he did.
Arno will be sorely missed by all who loved and admired him.
Survived by his five children: Stacie Loyd (Mike), Marci Call (James), Ryan Thierbach, Janae Lockhart (Scott), Jannalyn Slack (Erik); five grandchildren: Scott Loyd (Courtney), Jessica Loyd, Kodie Osterberg, Charley Osterberg, Connor Brigante, and one great-grandchild, Everest.
