Thelma Brewer Ward, 97, of Richmond, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 28, 2018. Born August 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Dillard and Nannie Brewer of Rogers, Ky. As a child, her family gave her the nickname “Cricket,” which she carried throughout her life. After graduating from the Nazareth School of Nursing in Lexington, Ky., she served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corp during World War II. She continued her career in nursing and retired from McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital after 28 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Guy V. Ward Jr. She is survived by her son, Guy V. Ward III; daughters, Sherrie W. Goodwin (Doug) and Debbie A. Ward; grandsons, Christopher W. Lynch and Benjamin W. Goodwin; two great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Greenhouse of Overland Park, Kan.; brother, Wendell Brewer of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends to cherish her memory. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. Private graveside service will follow.
