He was born with numerous challenges and characterized as a “special needs child”. Very early in life, his parents divorced and a neighbor, Anna Mae Hairston, was hired by his father to be the caregiver for his three children. In 1961, she became his stepmother and together they provided care for Ronnie and all the children in the household until Ronnie’s condition required constant professional oversight. At that time, Ronnie was transferred to Southwestern Virginia Training Center in Hillsville, VA where he remained until its closure. Then, he relocated to Next Level Residential in Chesterfield, VA where he resided until his passing.
Although Ronnie was unable to develop traditional language, he was very communicative through sounds, facial expressions, and body language. He laughed heartily, loved being in the sunshine, sitting in his favorite chair, good food, and watching TV including the worship services on Sunday morning. He enjoyed outings, going for rides, activities at the day center and just being with his housemates and team leaders, particularly Latrice Hubbard and Wayne Brown.
Like many others with underlying conditions, contracting Covid took an enormous toll upon Ronnie’s health. Although he tested negative and was happy to be at home where he was loved, Ronnie never fully regained his strength. He passed away peacefully resting in his bed.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Jackie Cook; stepbrothers Allen, Peter, and Jimmy Hairston; stepsisters, DelRoy Doue’t, Judy Hatcher, Jean H. Guyton, Mary Ann H. Childress, and Nora H. Taylor. He is survived by siblings from his biological mother; Debbie Doue’t, and Johnny Hatcher and stepsisters from his stepmother: Cora Hairston and Dr. Clara Reed (spouse-Charles Reed) along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We are not saying good-bye but see you later when we gather at the throne of Jesus Christ the Lord.
