He is preceded in death by his father Raydor Mays, Sr., his mother Lucielle, his wife Connie, and his daughter Renee. He is missed by his devoted wife, soul mate, and best friend, Dale. He is survived by his sons Greg (Lynn), Glen (Jackie), and their families. His other family members that are sorely missing his wisdom, friendship, stories, and kindness are Amy (Steve), Sam (Anne), and Ashley (Joseph). He also leaves behind his devilishly adored pup, Emma.
Clayton was raised in Lynchburg, VA and loved sharing stories about being raised on a peach and apple orchard. In the 70s, Clayton utilized his knowledge and entrepreneurship by purchasing his first piece of rigging equipment, which eventually evolved to him starting his own craning company, Riggers, Inc., and accomplishing a significant amount of projects in Virginia and other states. Clayton was an old-school gentleman that loved keeping a meticulous lawn and home, hated any noise in the kitchen and any kind of mess (he could find the smallest piece of dust without even using a microscope)…. And was so notoriously proper that he even tucked his t-shirt into his pajamas. He was as witty as he was kind, and he loved spending time chit-chatting on the porch with a nice glass of red wine. While he enjoyed a quiet evening, Clayton was inquisitive and listened with a genuine interest in others, while always being able to add value to the conversation because he either had a story, knew something regarding the person/subject, or he had a desire to learn more because he truly cared. For him, it was always about earning trust and making a connection, to which he made many.
We are incredibly grateful for the time that we were able to spend with him, including the yellow daffodils he took so much pride in growing every Spring. He will be missed by many, including his dear friends Tom and Roger.
The family will be celebrating his life privately. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Claybrook Baptist Church (PO Box 15, Weems, VA 22576).
