She was preceded in death by her father, Otto E. Van Derck, and her mother, Willa Kriz Van Derck.
She is survived by her sister Gretchen Van Derck Weber, daughter Stephanie Gist, son-in-law Chris Gist and grandchild Cal Gist; son James Van Reed, daughter-in-law Lea Bladon Reed and grandchildren James, Willa, David and Ava Reed; as well as numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews and good friends.
Born in Chicago Illinois, Beth graduated Carl Schurz High School in Chicago in 1959 and later from the University of Illinois in 1963. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, Beth worked for 35 years for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Beth was passionate about her work, and was instrumental in the creation and preservation of Virginia State Parks. Beth was a great reader and lover of history, music and travel. She met her long-term goal of visiting each state park in Virginia. Most of all, Beth was a thoughtful sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews, and never missed sending a birthday card and gift.
The family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home - Huguenot Road location from 4 - 6 pm on Saturday, October 21st, as well as on Sunday, October 22nd from 11 am - noon. Service will start at noon, at Woody Funeral Home, right after viewing on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Virginia State Parks.
