VANDEWEGHE, Alfred Bernard (Al), 93, of Midlothian, departed this life Sunday, February 2, 2014. Al was born in Wyckoff, New Jersey on October 25, 1920 to Aime’ and Ada Vandeweghe. Al loved sports. His football career started when he was at Ridgefield High School in New Jersey. There he won All-County and All-State honors and was later inducted into their Hall of Fame. Al transferred to Hampton High School in Virginia and continued his athletic success in both football and basketball. For the first time in school history, the basketball team won the state championship. Al won All-State honors. Al graduated from the College of William and Mary, where he converted from back to an end. He was an All-American mention in 1942. After college, Al enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed at Bainbridge Naval Station for two years, playing on two undefeated football teams. This won him Mid-Atlantic All-Service honors. After Bainbridge, Al went to Shoemaker, Calif. To play a year of football on the Fleet City Blue Jacket team that went 8-0-1 in 1945. After playing one year with the Buffalo Bisons (Bills), Al was offered a job coaching ends at William and Mary, and accepted. In 1947, the team went 9-2 and played in the Dixie Bowl. In 1950, Al left William and Mary to be an Education Advisor at the Army Education Center in Ft. Eustis, Va. He stayed there until he retired as the Chief of Army Education. Al leaves behind one son, Michael Vandeweghe and his family of Midlothian, Va. and one daughter, Nancy Vandeweghe Lau of Westport, CT and her family, one sister, Muriel McGowan, of Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla.
