Mel was born on May 29, 1942 to Johnny Lewis Wilson and Bertha Mae (Kading) Wilson at home in Odessa, Texas. He graduated from Ector High School in 1963.In 1972, Mel started Commercial Coating Company in Amarillo, Texas, and then Western Coating Co in Odessa, TX in 1982. He was a founding member and first president of the Permian Basin Chapter of PDCA and President of the Permian High School Football Booster Club during the 1987-88 school year
Mel was a family man who loved spending time with his family and friends. Mel married his best friend and love Brenda Ruth Carson on August 16, 1963 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas. They spent the next 54 years living life to the fullest. He loved his family and enjoyed travelling, cooking, fishing, spending time with friends, but was happiest when he was with his wife, sons, and most especially his grandkids.
Mel is survived by his loving wife Brenda; sons Michael Wilson and wife Freeda, Kevin Wilson and wife Leslie; grandson Johnny Wilson and granddaughter Sydney Wilson; brother Jimmy Wilson and wife Sherry; sister Joyce Longino and husband Jimmy; brother-in-law Scotty Carson and wife Bonnie, brother-in-law Ben Carson and wife Debbie, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by youngest son Shawn Patrick Wilson, father Johnny Lewis Wilson and mother Bertha Mae Matthews.
The family will receive guests on Friday April 6, 2018 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy, Midland, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday April 7, 2018 at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Landon Thompson, Don Owens, Cole Hughes, Barry Crawford, Guy Carson, Austin Wilson, Paul Quigley and David Wilson.
