Mary was born March 14, 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas to Dr. William Shelton Barcus and Margaret White Barcus. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1947. She attended Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia for two years before completing her education at the University of Texas in Austin in 1951 where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. While at UT, she met her future husband Charles S. Hunter while he was stationed at Fort Hood. She and Charlie were married September 26, 1952 in Fort Worth, and began life together in the oil patch in Denver City, Texas. Two years later they moved to Midland and lived there for the rest of their married life until Charlie’s death in 1999. They raised two sons, Shelton Barcus Hunter (Barc) and Thomas Shepherd Hunter (Tom).
Mary worked for Charlie for a number of years supporting his oil and gas business. Mary was active in the community including her service as a member of the Junior League of Midland and the Museum of the Southwest and later the Wednesday Club and Christ Church.
Mary loved entertaining at home and was an excellent cook. She and Charlie enjoyed hosting dinner parties at their home with their many friends.
Mary also enjoyed gardening and spent many hours with Charlie growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables in their home garden. Mary frequently transformed the fruits of their gardening labors into delicious meals for her family and friends.
Mary and Charlie also loved to travel and had many wonderful trips abroad together. Mary continued to travel extensively with friends after Charlie passed away. Mary lived in Midland until 2013 when she moved to Austin.
Mary was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Midland for over 40 years and subsequently, Christ Church of Midland.
In the last 5 years of her life, Mary was blessed by the loving caregivers and staff of the Brookdale Northwest Hills assisted living and memory care facility in Austin. She was also blessed by additional devoted private caregivers. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers who have helped Mary over the last 5 years.
Survivors: Sons Barcus Hunter of Fort Worth, and Tom Hunter and wife Michelle Hunter of Austin. Grandsons Matthew Hunter (Fort Worth), Alec Hunter and Holden Hunter of Austin.
