Fred was born in Stanton, Texas on January 30, 1925 to the late Charles Robert and Freddie Lou (Metcalf) Hall. He graduated from Monahans High School, Class of ’42. Upon graduation he moved to Seattle, WA and worked as a welder in the shipyards for a short time. He returned to Midland and worked as a cowboy on the Scharbauer Ranch before entering into the Army -1st Calvary 24th Division, 378th Harbor Craft Co and the 75th Amphibian Truck Co in 1944. Fred married Leona Irene (Hughes) Hall on January 2, 1947. The family spent their summers custom wheat harvesting throughout the Great Plains states from 1948-1960. In 1960, Fred decided to quit wheat harvest to begin farming cotton, custom combining, cutting and baling hay with the help of his girls. History was his passion and he loved reminiscing and telling stories about his early days. One of his favorite sayings was “Women have carried me through this world and women will carry me out.” Later in life he became an avid leather crafter and both friends and strangers were the beneficiaries of his handiwork.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles Robert and Freddie Lou Hall; wife, Leona Irene Hall; daughter, Patricia Mae Hall; brothers, Alton Hall and Lee Roy Hall; sisters, Vina Rhue Hall and Loreitta Hall Black.
Fred is survived by four daughters: Roberta Ann Hall Wilhelm of Gardendale, TX; Bobbie Jo Hall Thornberry and husband William Don “Sandy” Thornberry of Clarendon, TX; Collene Hall of Midland, TX and Ellen Marie Hall Pafford and husband Terry Pafford of Midland, TX. Grandchildren: Amy Thornberry, Carey Thornberry, Lindsey Bainter, Valerie Barrow and Andrew Pafford. Great-grandchildren: Hayden Welch, Hallie Thornberry, Harper Thornberry, Paisley Jo “Irene” Locklar, Dakota Barrow and Anna Lea “Annabel Lea” Barrow.
An open house viewing, to pay final respects and sign the memorial book, will be from 10:00am -5:00pm Friday, November 26, at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Family Visitation will be held at Greenwood Church of Christ on Friday November 26 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, November 27 at Greenwood Church of Christ with Ron Rice and Royce Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family is thankful for the care provided by Visiting Angels, especially Edel, and Heart to Heart Hospice. Appreciation to the Greenwood Baptist Church Meal Team and the many families that brought him meals over the past couple of years. He enjoyed so much seeing the young children come on the deliveries.
