Russell William Bernard, Jr., age 88, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Mr. Bernard was a native of New Orleans, LA and resident of Metairie, LA. He was married to the love of his life, Jeanne Carstens Bernard for 66 years. Father of Russell Wm. Bernard, III (wife, Pam) and Kathleen Bernard Nixon (husband, Mike). Grandfather of Andrew Nixon (wife, April), Benjamin Nixon (wife, Leslie), Betsey Hazard (husband, Jack) and Jonathan Bernard (wife, Kelly). Great grandfather of Andrew Nixon, Jr., Savanna Nixon, Madeleine Nixon, Chase Nixon, Emma Nixon and Gibson Hazard. Brother of Richard O. Bernard (wife, Joan). Son of the late Russell Wm. Bernard, Sr. and Catherine Dieck Bernard. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Mr. Bernard served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of Old Metairie Protestant Church, the Good ‘Ole Metairie Boys and was a former member of the American Legion. Mr. Bernard, affectionately known as Pops or Pop, deeply loved his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a talented woodworker, had a passion for boats and enjoyed fishing. He will be greatly missed by all. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., near Clearview Pkwy., in Metairie, LA on Tuesday evening, October 28, 2014 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM and on Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014 beginning at 9:00 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM in Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home’s chapel.
