George Edward Duffy Sr.

George Edward Duffy Sr., a resident of Destrehan, entered into eternal life peacefully on November 9, 2010 at the age of 92. His wife of 69 years, Gladys Ray Duffy preceded him in death in July of 2009. He was born in New York City on May 17, 1918 to Harriet Clark Duffy and Capt. George Edward Duffy who was killed in action October 4, 1918 in France as a member of the Fighting 69th Irish Brigade. He leaves four children: George Jr., Gladys Salva, Dennis F. Duffy and Carol Joy-Mooney; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

George graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1940. He sailed for United Fruit Company and joined the U.S Navy in early 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. His vessel took part in seven invasions including the liberation of the Philippians and sailed into Tokyo Bay at the end of the Pacific War. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946. He worked as an Ordinance Engineer for the Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard until 1958. He commenced working for the N.Y. Daily News and N.Y. Times as a member of the Circulation Department and as a member of the International Mailers Union. He retired with his wife to the family home on Cape Cod in 1980. He lived there until April 2006 when he moved to Destrehan.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday morning, November 13, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions be made by mail to the World War II Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 or online at nationalww2museum.org. Please indicate Memorial Contribution on your envelope if mailing. Also include Mr. Duffy’s name as the person being memorialized and the name and address or email address of the person to be acknowledged.
