Samuel Edward Hale Jr., age 87, of Plano, Texas passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021. Samuel was born March 5, 1934 in The Bronx, New York to Samuel Edward Hale and Bertha Popper Hale. Ed, as he preferred to be called, lived as a young man in The Bronx, NY, Middletown, NY, Miami, FL, Phoenix, AZ and Amarillo, TX. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts followed by his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1960. He met and married Norma Gail Mashburn in 1956 in Austin, Texas, while both were students at UT Austin. The couple settled in Dallas and had three sons, Thomas, David and Robert.After graduating law school, Ed was hired as general counsel of Dallas Teachers Credit Union, where he worked for more than 35 years. Ed retired from DTCU as its President in 1996.
In his spare time, Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His two favorite times of the year were family Christmas celebrations and the annual Hale/Farquharson family vacation in Destin, Florida. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking. His family and friends will always remember his brilliant financial and legal mind, and will miss receiving his advice on both personal and business matters.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Edward and Bertha Hale; sister, Ethel Musbach Wiley; son, Thomas Edward Hale; brother-in-law, Thomas Corbin Mashburn and sister-in-law, Martha Mashburn Uland. Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma Gail Hale; sister, Gloria Hale Tidrow and husband, Van; sons, David Hale and Robert Hale and his wife, Trudy; grandchildren, Jamie Gallagher and husband, Joe, Jarod Hale, John David Hale and wife, Ashley, Jordan Hale, Sydney Hale and Lauren Hale and great-grandchildren, Jaxon Hale and Jonah Gallagher.
Honoring Ed's wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of his life in May. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his son's name, Thomas Edward Hale, to the Mayo Clinic to support cancer research.
