United States Air Force Lt. Colonel. (ret.) Richard Olmstead Julian passed away on July 17, 2016 at age 83. He was born on March 6, 1933 in Los Angeles, CA, to Reginald and Elizabeth Julian. After graduating from UCLA, Richard served in the U.S. Air Force as a C-141 transport pilot in Vietnam and flying special air missions with the 99th Military Airlift Squadron during the Nixon presidency. Richard was awarded the Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Air Medal, and Bronze Star. Following his military career, Richard continued service to his country at the Veterans Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration as an inspector with the FAA when he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981 until his retirement in 2012.
As a devoted patron of Arizona Opera and the Phoenix Symphony, Richard shared his love of music with his family. His passion for baseball began as a child in the 1930’s going to Hollywood Stars games in Los Angeles. Richard not only loved major league baseball, but was faithfully present in the stands of his children’s and grandchildren’s Little League games.
Richard is survived by his wife Monica of 58 years, his daughter Marian Dean (David) and his sons Wayne (Ellen), Paul (Siiri), and Tom (Wendy); his brother Doug (JoAnn) and niece Dani Unterkofler (Jeff and son, Eric); five grandchildren, Matthew (and mother, Eunice), Zachary, Alex, Hannah, and Micah. Richard was preceded in death by his son Philip.
Services will be held at Lakeshore Mortuary in Mesa, Arizona, Monday, July 25, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the graveside service following at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at 12:30 PM. To share a memory with the family, please visit www.LakeshoreMort.com.
