Dick was born on November 15, 1933, in Stephen Minnesota to Alfred A. “Doc”, and Mildred “Sue” Hass. He had one older brother William “Bill”; The boys played high school sports together for the Stephen Tigers. Sports would remain a lifelong love of Dick’s.
Dick and Pat were married in 1955 in Drayton, ND and two years later moved to Fort Sill Oklahoma when Dick was drafted into the US Army. They had two memorable years making lifelong friends with other military couples and personnel.
After the Army, Dick worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a telegrapher. Shortly after their daughter Lisa was born in 1963 Dick and Pat moved to East Grand Forks, MN. Dick began working for Minnesota AAA as a salesman and in 1968 took a similar job in Fargo, ND with NDAAA. Being the super salesman, he moved up the ladder until his retirement in 1992 as the Vice President of Sales.
Dick remained an avid sports fan with the Minnesota Vikings being his favorite team. He cheered on all the Minnesota pro teams, and later those of the NDSU Bison during his long residence in Fargo. Eventually he had to become a University of Michigan fan where his daughter Lisa is an athletic trainer. He enjoyed attending the 1993 Final Four, the 1997 Rose Bowl, several football games in The Big House, and a couple of NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships.
In addition to sports, lake life was one of Dick’s loves. He and Pat lived on Little Detroit Lake for many years before retiring as snowbirds in Arizona where they enjoyed spending time with friends old and new.
Dick will be forever remembered for his sense of humor and his smile. Even during his final months under hospice care, the caregivers always commented on his smile and friendly nature.
