LeRoy Hirsch was born to Alvin and Veda Mae Hirsch November 2, 1936, in Fairbury, Nebraska. He was the third in the family that would be six boys and two girls. Alvin was a section foreman for Rock Island RR, and the family soon relocated to Powhattan, Kansas.
LeRoy graduated from Powhattan high school with determination to become other than a farmer, grain elevator or railroad worker. He had participated in NROTC in school, had two brothers who had joined the military, so logically went with three friends to Navy Recruiting within a few days of graduation. He took military life with enthusiasm, found abilities and learning in electronics, and was sent to Kansas University for further education. Two and a half years into his studies he suffered a severe appendectomy with extensive recovery. The Navy released him with an honorable discharge. It was a disappointment, but he summoned his energies for work plus school and completed requirements for the Electrical Engineering degree. The same years were blessed by his marriage to the pretty and bright Jean and beginnings of their family- Kathi, Tim and Joni.
First employment as an engineer was with Westinghouse. The family lived in several places as his career progressed. They were in Thousand Oaks, CA, when a friend recruited him to Motorola, Mesa, AZ in 1968. Motorola provided job growth and an opportunity to acquire a Masters Degree from ASU.
The family became members of Grace UMC. LeRoy served in areas of Stewardship and finance and sang in choir. LeRoy and son Tim were in Trailblazers, and their home was active with growing up young people. LeRoy was always a sports enthusiast—especially football. He held Sun Devil Football Season tickets beginning in 1968. By 1983, however, stresses on the family brought a divorce.
Friends encouraged LeRoy to “get out” with activities. At Mountain Shadows, he asked Sylvia Vaughan for a dance, learned that both were from the SE Valley, both Methodists, and knew several people in common. He later came to St Matthew with Sylvia, and in January of 1988 they were married. An exuberant life of careers, travel, hiking and skiing with friends, dwindled beginning with LeRoy’s heart surgery in 2010. Having lived as a child of God he returned to the Lord on Tuesday, April 16th.
LeRoy is survived by:
