Jay served in the US Army from March 1959-April 1962 where he received awards for Good Conduct, Marksman (Rifle) and Marksman (Carbine) He then went on to have a career as a Machinist at Dow Chemical, Coors, Los Alamos National Laboratory, ASU, Holsum Bakery and American National Can (Rexam).
He was a member of the Coal Creek Canyon Volunteer fire department and loved camping with his family when his children were young, and camping/travelling with Barbara when the children were grown.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Smith of Mesa, AZ.
Children: Jay (Cathy) Smith of Pine, AZ; Susan (Mike) Croye of Mesa, AZ; Carol (Mike) Coffey of Pahrump, NV; Cindy Knudsen of San Tan Valley, AZ and David (Ernestina) Smith of Tempe, AZ.
Grandchildren: Jay Smith V, Christy (Sean) Hendrix, Becky Smith, Joshua (Stacie) Croye, Brianna (Bryan) Tournas, Michael Coffey, Brittany Coffey, Amber (Jake) Long, Alyssa Nelson, Courtney Knudsen, Beth (Jake) Craig, Valeria Smith and Marcos Smith
Great grandchildren: Jazmyn, LJ, Damien, Derek, Victoria, Lexi, Gabby, Mabel, McKenna, Kanyon, Aiden, Griffin, Landon, Maddy, Ryan, Emma, Noah and Caleb.
Brother Bob Smith (Debbie) of Scottsdale, AZ and his sister Judy Needham of Randolph, MA, Brother in Law Ronnie Key (Nelda) and Sister in Law Billie Key as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a reception at 1:00 pm following the Committal Service at the home of Mike and Susan Croye. Address information will be available at both services.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to The Parkinson's Foundation
