Gil was born on February 4, 1946 at the Naval Base in Long Beach, California. He grew up on a citrus farm on Baseline Road in Tempe, Arizona. With his dad and two brothers, he was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, and earned his Eagle Scout Award as a teenager. Gil earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Colorado University in 1968 and an MBA from Arizona State University in 1981.
He served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Pogy (SSN647) during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1973 and served in the Naval Reserves for the next few years.
He was a member of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce for many years and was presented the Award of Excellence as owner of his family’s Journey’s End Restaurant in Tempe, Arizona.
Gil was owner and operator of the Aquarian Tax Service in Chandler, Arizona preparing income tax returns for hundreds of clients for over 41 years. He was a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals during those same 41 years and served as treasurer for the Central AZ Chapter of the Arizona Society of Enrolled Agents (CACEA).
Gil was an avid Arizona Diamondback fan for over 24 years.
Gil was preceded in death by his parents, James Anders and Margaret Henry. He is survived by his wife, Donna, step-sons, George (Nadine) and John Scott (Theresa) Sowards, two brothers, Charles (Jan) of Chino Valley, and George of Phoenix, as well as four grandchildren, Hayley, CJ, Benjamin, and Breanna.
