Born and raised an Iowa farm boy, he always had a sense of adventure and travel. Harry joined the military and for over 20 years, served in the Army and Air Force on active duty as well as the Army National Guard, Air Force Reserve, and Army Reserve. After completing Cadet Pilot Training in the Air Force, he served as an Aircraft Commander flying C-124s in the Military Air Transport Service and B-47s for Strategic Air Command. His travels in the Air Force literally took him to every corner of the world. Even though he loved the adventure, he never forgot his family.
Of all his travel locations, his favorite destination since 1956 was Hawaii. It was there that he met the love of his life, Margaret Altmann, known as Peg or ‘Sweetheart’ to Harry. They were married in 1958, spending over 50 years together traveling all over the country and raising their family. Their love affair never ended even though Peg passed away in 2007. Harry was a devoted son, brother, nephew, uncle, husband, father and grandfather, enjoying every moment spent with his children and grandchildren.
Harry is survived by all of his children: Barbara Jordan Payne and husband, Tommy, of Leander, Texas; Harry, Jr. and wife, Sheryl, of Austin, Texas; Cindy Harrison of Austin, Texas; Thomas Evans and wife, Joan, of Springfield, Virginia; Margie Cupps and husband, David, of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, as well as twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
