Fred was born on August 5, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana to parents Frederick Dean Miles, Sr. and Margaret (Stevenson) Miles. Fred attended Arizona State University, from which he graduated in 1966 and subsequently joined the United States Air Force. Fred’s years of military of service included combat duty in Vietnam and a lengthy tenure in the reserves until he retired in 2004. Fred is a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Award.
Fred married the love of his life, Barbara (Roesch) Miles, on May 6, 1967. Along with his vibrant military career, Fred worked for Motorola Inc. for over 25 years, including various expatriate assignments where he and Barbara traveled the world. Following retirement, Fred went on to receive his Masters Degree from Grand Canyon University, and continued to work as an adjunct professor at Ottawa University up to the time of his death.
Fred’s involvement and contributions to his community were plentiful. He was an active member of Dayspring United Methodist Church, a leader and mentor in the Alcoholics Anonymous community, and served in ongoing leadership capacities for his Theta Chi Fraternity, among others. Fred was known as the man who didn’t know a stranger, and everyone was a friend. His laughter was contagious and his generous spirit was obvious to all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of overwhelming love, kindness and humility.
Fred fiercely loved his family and never missed an opportunity to share a meal together, travel, attend sporting events or play a round of golf together. Fittingly, Fred left his earthly life with some stellar shots on the golf course, and in the company of some of his favorite people.
Fred is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; son Frederick (Rick) Dean Miles III and wife Karen; grandsons Dylan Frederick Miles (and wife Alexis), and Trevor Ray Miles; and siblings Margaret (Miles) Flynn and Jon Miles.
A committal service for Frederick will be held Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 10:30 AM at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85024.
