Elizabeth (Liz) Frances Schlotterer, 86, of Chandler, AZ, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at the home of her daughter, surrounded by family, after a short illness.
She was born on August 9, 1931 to Camillo and Frances (ne’e Aversa) Zecca, in Garrett, Indiana, one of six children.
Liz graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in 1949 as Valedictorian. She sang in the choir and was a member of the Garrett Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Daughter of Isabella, and Psi lota Xi Sorority. She was a Girl Scout leader, worked for the State Auto License Bureau, and the Garrett State Bank.
Elizabeth married Joseph H. Schlotterer on September 5, 1953, in Garrett. They lived in Ohio for many years, raising seven children. Together they celebrated 38 years of marriage, until his passing in 1992.
Liz worked at the public library in Crestline, Ohio, in the early 1970’s. She graduated from Kent State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in English Education and Library Science. In 1978 she started the Elementary Library Program in Ajo, AZ. She received her Master of Science Degree in Educational Media from the University of Arizona, in 1987. She continued as a librarian and English teacher until her retirement in 1993. Upon her retirement she worked in her daughter’s medical office. Elizabeth was an avid reader. She also enjoyed crocheting, word searches, watching various sporting events, attending events involving her grandchildren, and watching the Hallmark Channel.
She was a parishioner at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, in Tempe’, where she had participated in a Women’s Bible Study Group.
Elizabeth is survived by daughters Elizabeth (Tony) Brown, of Gilbert, Cecilia (Steven) Swenson, of Phoenix, Lucille O’Donnell and Dr. Mary Schlotterer, both of Chandler, and Barbara (Michael) McGlynn, of Tuscon; sons Karl (Denee) Schlotterer, of Ashland, Ohio, and Stephen (Ann) Schlotterer of Hamilton, Montana; Brother-in-law David Ferguson of Garrett; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Liz was preceded in death by 1 grandchild, Cassandra (ne’e O’Donnell) Burch, 2 sisters, Helen Conkle and Evelyn Ferguson; 3 brothers Vincent Zecca, Henry Zecca and Henry Paul Zecca; brother-in-law Harold Conkle; sisters-in-law Joan Zecca and Mary Zecca.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 10:00am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1800 E. Libra Dr., Tempe’, AZ, with Fr. Cletus Kulah officiating.
Burial will be at a later date, in Avilla, IN.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 S. Dobson Rd., Mesa, AZ.
