David Lyndon Kelley passed away January 30, 2013 in Gilbert, AZ at age 82. David was born August 31, 1930 in Riverside, CA to Albert Lyndon and Verna Mae (nee Studebaker) Kelley. David's parents were life-long residents of Riverside. His maternal great-grandparents were among the original settlers of Riverside, CA. David was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Albert Stephen and John Norman Kelley.
David had a life-long love and aptitude for music. As a boy, he and his brother John were contract performers with Paramount Pictures and appeared in such films as "The Star Maker" with Bing Crosby; "You're The One"; and "Our Gang/Little Rascals" serials. David was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing for himself and his family on a daily basis. His love of music developed into a keen interest in the design and construction of high performance loudspeakers that he shared with family and friends throughout his retirement.
David was a gifted athlete and while still in high school he became a star fast-pitch softball pitcher for the Riverside Browns for which he was given Special Recognition in 2009 by the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame.
David served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He was stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM.
David's belief in the tremendous power of education led him to seek degrees in higher education. He received his Bachelor's degree from San Diego State University in 1957; his Master's degree from the University of Southern California in 1958; and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California in 1963.
David devoted his professional life to the study and teaching of sport and physical movement. David was a professor of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland - College Park from 1964 until his retirement in 1993. In 1971, David wrote and illustrated a classic biomechanics text entitled: Kinesiology: Fundamentals of Motion Description published by Prentice-Hall. In the early 1970’s David chaired and spearheaded a faculty committee that developed the Kinesiological Sciences degree. The first degree awarded in “Kinesiological Science” was in 1974 – the first time such a degree was given in the US. In 1977, he was named a Founding Member of the American Society of Biomechanics. In the late 1970s, when the Department moved to a new building, David was critical to the development of the biomechanics laboratory - its vision and equipment. That laboratory space is still used as part of what is now called the Cognitive Motor Neuroscience Laboratory. From 1980 until his retirement in 1993, David served as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Kinesiology. As such he was instrumental in maintaining and advancing the scientific and scholarly mission of the department. In 1990, David was awarded the Doris W. Sands, Outstanding Teaching Award on behalf of the College of Health and Human Performance. In 1994, David was declared a Professor Emeritus for his distinguished service to the Department of Kinesiology by his colleagues and approved by the Board of Regents. In 1997, David was elected a Life Member of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports for his outstanding contributions.
David instilled in his children, students and colleagues the importance of hard work, discipline and determination. David's high expectations of those around him were always grounded in his even higher expectations of himself. David's devotion to excellence will be greatly missed.
David is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Ann (nee Cothran) who cared tirelessly for her husband at home throughout his long illness. David is also survived by his daughters Sarah and Elisa, his sons-in-law Jonathan and Brian, and his four adoring granddaughters Julia, Caroline, Jaclyn and Leslie. "We love you Pop Pop!"
David's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will take place at a later date. David's remains will be interred at the Prescott National Cemetery (Department of Veterans Affairs), Prescott, AZ.
