David James “Jim” Gilmour, 91, a resident of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on April 15, 2018 in Mesa, Arizona. He was born on April 13, 1927, in Rumford, Maine to David William and Jessie Ann [Goodfellow] Gilmour. Jim graduated from Stephen High School in Rumford, Maine and went on to the University of Maine where he majored in Forestry. Following his college years, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on March 1, 1945 where he served as a First Class Fireman, until being Honorably discharged on May 31, 1946. Jim and his late wife Phyllis met at a dance, and the two were wed in 1951. They moved to Pasadena, California, then after about a year they moved to Lakewood, California in 1954. While in California, Jim worked for Westinghouse for a short time and then started his 30 year career with the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department. They then later built a home in Scottsdale and eventually moved to Mesa. Jim and Phyllis were avid square dancing and round dancing partners, loved to travel all around the world, including Hawaii and Scotland and went on numerous cruises together.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents David and Jessie; his sister, Jean Barrington and on February 25, 2016, his beloved wife of 65 years, Phyllis Evelyn Gilmour. He is survived by his son David Gilmour Jr.; grandson Bryan Gilmour (Kara), granddaughter Kelly Knutson (Matt) and great grandchildren Catherine, Ashlyn, Summer and Patrick. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 23, 2017 at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care. Arrangements are entrusted to Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park.
