Veda Rose Houchin, age 85, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Autumn House in Melbourne, FL after a brief battle with pneumonia. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend who touched the hearts of many throughout her life.
Veda was born in Hustonville, Kentucky, and married James in 1961 and they relocated to Denver, Colorado. They came to the Space Coast of Florida, in June 1967 and ended up settled in Merritt Island in 1984. She worked as an Executive Administrative Specialist at Lockheed Space Operations at Kennedy Space Center, retiring in February 1998 after many years of dedicated service. Her work at the space center was a testament to her skill, commitment, and passion for excellence. Veda was also a devoted member of the Seed of Abraham Fellowship and was known for her loving nature and her dedication to helping others.
Veda’s family was the heart of her life. She shared 63 years, 2 months, 7 days, and 23 minutes of marriage with her beloved husband, James Houchin, and together they raised three children: Tami McBryde (Lamar), John Houchin (Michele), and Andrew Houchin (Anita). Veda was a cherished grandmother to her eight grandchildren, seven of whom survive her: Andrew II (Morgan), Parker (Thiago), Connor, Abigail, Amelia, Megan, and John C. She was predeceased by her grandson, Timothy Houchin.
Veda is also survived by her siblings: Ronald Pemberton (Kathleen) and Brenda Dwight.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Mable Pemberton, and several siblings, including Vernon Pemberton (Jeannie), Peggy Musick (Melvin), Bobby Pemberton (Evon), Vonda Allen, Franklin Pemberton, and Kirby Pemberton.
Veda will be remembered for her selflessness, her ability to make others laugh, and her unwavering love for her family. She was a woman who truly cared for others, always putting them first. In her later years, as she faced the challenges of dementia, her family continued to love and support her, and her spirit remained strong until the very end. She is deeply missed, but her family finds comfort in knowing she is at peace and look forward to the day when they will be reunited in the presence of their Messiah.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 1:30 to 2:00 PM at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, 1360 N. Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, FL. with Funeral service and a catered reception to follow.
A committal service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 9:30 AM at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 US-1, Mims, FL.
