Edward H. Gomez passed away at home in Merced, CA on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at the age of 69. He was known to his family and friends as “Eddie”, “Uncle Eddie”, and “Bumper”. He was born in Firebaugh, CA on July 4, 1951. Eddie was raised in Planada, CA and attended Planada Elementary School where he was active in the school’s marching band. He played the tuba, trumpet, and was proud to be the drum major for the band. He attended Le Grand High School and played football for the Bulldogs proudly wearing number 51. He graduated from Le Grand High School in 1969, however before high school graduation and with parental signatures, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. On December 10, 1969, Eddie began to officially serve his country in the U.S. Army for 3 years. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany during the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, Eddie returned home to Planada and spent many years working as a mechanic and silage truck driver.
Eddie’s hobbies included drawing, listening to music, playing harmonica, and rhythm guitar. Playing music for family and friends brought out the best in Eddie. He was a member of local bands Soul Flames, The Jades, and Sabrosos. Eddie was also a natural born funny man. He loved telling jokes especially to his nephews and nieces. Eddie would often laugh uncontrollably before he could get the punchline out. Eddie also enjoyed giving his parents’ pet dogs silly and funny names. Eddie was a diehard Raiders fan. He was loyal to the Raiders during their time in Oakland, Los Angeles, and most recently Las Vegas.
He is preceded in death by his parents Domingo and Dora. He is survived by his only sibling Irene Gomez Craig (Merced, CA), his nieces Lucrisia Adame (Modesto, CA), Deanna Adame (Merced, CA), Sarah Adame and her spouse Patrick DeFehr (Merced, CA), Jessica Ramirez (Le Grand, CA) and his nephew John Adame (Turlock, CA). He is also survived by his great nieces and great nephews: Journee, Billy, Isaiah, Daniel, John F. Jr, Brooklynn, Isabella, Aaliyah, Arthur James “A.J.”, and Christopher.
Funeral services will be private and held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA on Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
