Constance West

October 14, 1916 – January 7, 2012

Constance (Connie) Elizabeth West passed away January 7, 2112, at age 95. She was a long time resident of Merced.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leonard Grove and Opal Gordils, her husband, Carl West, her sister Katherine Belmour, and grandson Thomas West. She is survived by her sisters, Alyce (Clarence)Davis, Eulalie (Clarence) Wilson of Windsor; sons Nicholas (Judy) of Los Banos and Michael (Carmen) West of Florida, daughter Marsha West of Merced ; grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, and Jennifer West of Modesto; Susan (Tom) Hobensack of Turlock, Amy West of Santa Barbara. She also had 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous foster children as well as nieces and nephews.

Constance was born in Santa Rosa on October 14, 1916. After her marriage, they lived in San Francisco where their children were born. They moved to Merced about 1950. She and Carl were foster care parents for Merced County for over 30 years.

She was a long time worker at St. Vincent de Paul Society until the past two years. She was also an avid quilter, which she took up at age 80. She donated many quilts to Merced County to comfort children under difficult circumstances.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Jones, Dr. Adrian Fedele, the staff at Mercy Medical Center and Hy Lond Convalescent Hospital for their care and support.

A Recitation of the Rosary will be held Thursday, Jan. 12th at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 21st and L Streets, Merced with services following at 10:00 a.m.
