R.I.P. Román Mejías

Born: August 9, 1925 in Abreus, Cuba

Died: February 22, 2023 in Los Angeles, California

I only just learned of his passing. He was the first star of the Houston major league franchise, and their second awful trade in what was to be a very long line of awful trades.

On June 20, 1962 the Houston Colt .45s had a 30-35 W-L record, which is the closest approach to .500 the team would make for the remainder of the season. Considering they were 19-29 on June 2, and 25-34 on June 12, the young Colt .45s did some impressive battling in their early days, and those battles were led by Roman Mejias, who was among the league leaders in most major offensive categories through the All-Star break. Then he was left off the All-Star team.

In August 2018 I drove to his address in L.A. in hopes of getting him to sign my "Six Gun Salute" book and "Here Come The Colts" booklet. A wrought iron fence surrounded his front yard and the gate was locked. I easily could have jumped over the fence, but I was a bit worried about getting shot. And my wife was in the car. Wish I'd had his phone number. RIP hombre.

Roman Mejias was my baseball hero when he played for the Houston Colt .45s.   He was an exciting player for us kids to watch.  I admired him for having the courage to come to the USA to follow his dream and later to bring his family here. I am grateful for Roman’s contributions to baseball, and for my fond memories of his time with the Colts.   My condolences to his family.
