My husband and I served with Bill as greeters at Central Church.  He always had a smile for everyone he met.  I am so sorry to hear of his passing but I know he is greeting everyone in Heaven with a huge smile on his face.

He was a man who enjoyed his job and loved people.  He brought smiles to those who came in contact with him.  Will always remember his badge.

Bill was a good neighbor to us for many years when we lived nearby.  More so, Bill was a wonderful & caring person to all who knew him....always giving of himself & helping those around him.  Affectionately referred to as 'the mayor of the cove'.  A tough man with a big heart.  Bill will be missed by many who are now better for having known him.

When my Grandfather passed away in 1969, Bill was at the house every day for a week. This was typical of Bill. No better man have I ever known. My Dad had no better friend or partner.

We have peace, comfort and joy  knowing Bill is in Heaven with his Savior and his adored Bernice.  Jackie,Judy,Jeanne and Janet

Mr. William Marlar Sr., was a wonderful man and patient. I enjoyed our conversations at the pharmacy and  shopping for you even when you were not getting prescriptions. Just to hear you say,"Hello Kiddo," made my day. You will be missed by your entire Sams Club family. God Bless!

When I was a pup on the MPD, Captain Marlar added a lot of color to the old North Precinct as he manned the desk.  He took that job seriously, and he always covered the cops in the field well.  It was a time when there were no cell phones or even walkie-talkies, and he was the only lifeline cops had to the world outside the police box.  He also allowed even rookies a bit of dignity in an otherwise tough place to get by.  I feel like we just lost a wise and kindly old uncle.

Those that knew Bill Marlar knew how he loved  God, his family, and his country.
He always wanted to help when there was a need,
He  was ever ready with humor and laughter.
We loved Uncle Bill dearly. So many fun and funny memories of him to cherish!

I went to work for the Memphis Police Department in Central Records in 1969 in the "old building" at 128 Adams.  One of the first "old time" detectives that I met was Bill Marlar and Jack Burress.  They looked like the old Dragnet series with their hats and swaggering down the hall.  They both cut an impressive swath.  Both of them were respectful and a joy to be around.  So sad to see some of the "old heads" depart this world.  He retired before I did but some people you never forget.  My sincere condolences to his family, he was a good man... Oh wow what a flood of great memories...Our entire family was touched by Bill and Bernice...  Our thoughts are with you Janice and Bobbi as you celebrate the great man he was and the great life he had.  I bet Bernice is so glad to be with him again.  He was always so genuine and caring and such a funny man...he would impress us kids with his one handed push ups in the living room floor,  ....and oh my, the trips with him to the car wash to get that Caddie cleaned up..  What a great man and a great family friend.  Thank you Janice for helping me talk to him not too long ago...may God be with you and your family as you put Bill to rest.

Bill Marlar. A Policemens Police man. What great memories he gave me...He will be greatly missed but always remembered in my heart.

Janice and Billy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I remember your Dad always being so likeable and easy to talk to when we were in high school.  He was a fine person.  You and your families are in my prayers.

Capt. Marlar was a great officer that always looked out for the younger officer. I have many fond memories of him at the old North Precinct.  May you rest in peace.

My condolences to the Marlar family.  I worked with Bill in the old Robbery office for many years and he was affectionately known as "Wild Bill" Marlar.  He never met a stranger and always kept his sense of humor, even when a trick was played on him.

Cpt Marlar never forgot where he came from and was a joy to work for.  His sense of humor was never lost.

I had the utmost of admniration for Capt. Bill Marlar. He was a fine officer with a great sense of humor. Mat he rest in peace.

I can see Capt. Marlar now sitting at the desk at the ole North Pct. greeting everyone with a smile and a pleasant comment. What a nice person and respected by all.

Captain Marlar was a Police Officer's Best friend.  He was always willing to help and try and get a good working police officer "out of trouble"  I am thankful that I was there when He accepted Christ as his Savior and watched him Change to a Man who was not only at church, but was serving the Lord every week at Central Church in Collierville, TN.  See you in Heaven, Captain.  You will be missed until we meet again!

Bill was my neighbor for over 28 years. During this time he has been an outstanding friend to my family and the community. I spent many hours over the years getting to know Bill the man. He was genuine and trustworthy. We often discuss faith in the Savior. Among the things he treasured most, outside his family, was being a Marine. He was a real patriot. We will miss him!

He was a man who thought of the good in everyone until they disappointed him. He had to see for himself.
He was tough as nails, yet, I have seen him shed tears at the loss of a fellow police officer, or reading a report where a child or elder citizen, had been injured/neglected. He remarked to me once that a real man is not afraid to show his saddness at the loss of someone or because someone is hurt..."You should never be afraid to show compassion Johnny it's a quality of character!"
I have seen him pass on a couple of dollars to people down on their luck and remark, "It could have been you or me."
I have responded to his station calls to quietly check on the welfare of some citizen he had met many years ago.
I have seen him ask people, "How is your family?" and be genuinely interested in their response.
He was always firm, but fair. Never carried a grudge. One of the best commanding officer's I ever had or knew. He was genuine and he was honest. I can think of no better words to describe him.

I will add that he had one of the best handshakes I knew of!
St. Peter is going to have a hard time beating this one!
