William "Bill" Driver Haynes, age 99, of Arlington, Tennessee passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at St. Francis Bartlett. Bill was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 28, 1923 to the late Samuel H. Haynes, Sr. and Lillie Virginia Smith Haynes.
Bill was a Staff Sergeant during World War II in 1943-1946. Following his time in the U.S. Army, he obtained his law degree by attending Southwestern College, Ole Miss, and Memphis State University. Bill was a retired assistant district attorney for Shelby County and later from private law practice. Bill was always an avid athlete and sports fan. In his youth, he played basketball for Messick High School and continued playing basketball, tennis, and swimming for recreation up until his late 80s. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing. Bill was a long time member of Buntyn Presbyterian Church.
Bill is survived by his nephews, Samuel H. Haynes, III of Memphis, TN and David L. Haynes of Arlington, TN; his niece, Harriet V. Caldwell of Holly Springs, MS; his sister-in-law, Sherry Gifford of Fort Ogden, FL; his 4 great-nieces; his 1 great-nephew; his 1 great great-niece and one on the way; and 2 great great-nephews. He is preceded in death by wife of 44 years, Marion R. Haynes; his son, William "Billy" Driver Haynes, Jr.; and his brother, Samuel H. Haynes, Jr.
He was like a second father to his nephews and niece and was always kind and generous to his entire family and a good friend to all who knew him.
Services for Bill will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022. Visitation will be held from 11:00AM until 12:00PM at Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00PM at Elmwood Cemetery located at 824 South Dudley St. in Memphis.
