ROBERT L. SCHWERIN, SR., 87, of Lakeland, TN died on December 4, 2014, retired cattleman and lifelong resident of Shelby County. He was a WWII Army veteran and was one of the few remaining members of the “Manhattan Project” who served at Los Alamos, NM. Bob was a past director of the Tennessee Polled Hereford Association. He served as the Secretary-Treasurer and Sale Manager of the West Tennessee Polled Hereford Association from 1966 to 1981. Bob was an advisor to the Shelby County 4-H club members on livestock projects. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Tennessee Sport Shooting Association and was on the competitive Rifle team at Memphis South Side High School and at Mississippi State College (now University). He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Laurine B. Schwerin and two sons, Robert L. “Dutch” Schwerin, Jr., and William B. “Bill” Schwerin. Bob is survived by daughters Theresa S. Ong (Tom) of Cordova and Dr. Elizabeth S. Todd of Cordova and Laurine S. Murphy (Kevin) of Tipton County and son John C. “Butch” Schwerin of Lakeland, and eleven grandchildren, and brother Carl “Buddy” Schwerin of Memphis. He was a communicant of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church at Somerville. Visitation will be at Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., rosary at 6 p.m. on December 7, 2014. Funeral Service will be held at St. Philips the Apostle Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Monday, December 8, 2014. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Interment will be in the Schwerin Family Cemetery in Lakeland. Interment will be in the Schwerin Family Cemetery in Lakeland.
