Mary E. Thorpe “Granny,” aged 92, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, went to Heaven to be with her Lord and her husband on June 25, 2024. She graduated from Messick High School where she served as Vice President of the Sigma Sigma Sorority for 3 years. She was happily married to Pete Thorpe Jr. for 57 years before his passing in 2010. She taught kindergarten at Macon Road Presbyterian Church for 4 years. She retired after 23 years of service from Memphis State University, where she was awarded Employee of the Year in 1993. She served as the President and Vice President of St. Stephen’s United Methodist UMW for several years.
She leaves her son Pete (Debbie) Thorpe III of Somerville, TN, 3 grandchildren: Renee (Richard) Landry of Arlington, TN, Tara (Aaron) Whittaker of Arlington, TN, and Matt (Holly) Thorpe of Moscow, TN, 6 great-grandchildren: Jackson and Morgan Landry, Aubrey Whittaker and Carly, Kendall and Camryn Thorpe, her sister Joann (Buddy) Stanley of Russellville, AL and her niece Kim (Steve) Clonts of Russellville, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Grace Norton of Memphis, TN.
Visitation will be held Tuesday July 2, 2024 at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 A.M. all at Family Funeral Care of Memphis located at 4925 Summer Ave.
A private interment will be held at Memphis Memory Gardens at 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church at 3981 Macon Road, Memphis, TN 38122, or a charity of your choice in her memory.
