Mary Evelyn Scott, lovingly called Sissy & Aunt Mary, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at Methodist University Hospital, in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on August 18, 1930, she was a survivor from birth, always optimistic, strong in her opinions and faithful to her family.
She loved working in the church nursery and singing to the babies. She was a feisty fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, being able to give any player’s stats at the drop of the hat. She enjoyed playing games, whether Canasta and Rook with her brothers and sisters, or Life, Yahtzee, Pick-Up Sticks and Sorry! with her nieces and nephews. She was a seamstress for Oak Hall for over 40 years, having been there longer than anyone else at her retirement in 2003.
She loved traveling: Connecticut, Busch Stadium to cheer the Cardinals, Mt. Rushmore, Gettysburg, the Little House on the Prairie homestead, the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Harper’s Ferry, the Alamo and the New Orleans Aquarium to name a few of her favorite memories.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Neely & Bertha Scott, her sisters, Floy McGarrh (Jim) and Faye Wing, her brothers, William Scott (Mary) and Roy Scott. She was also preceded by her nieces Leah Scott, Lauana Stansbury and Desi Arnold and her nephews, Michael Applewhite, William Scott, Jr., and Lloyd “Butch” Scott. She is survived by two sisters, Sharon Ricketts (Paul) and Janice Vinson, and her brother, Lloyd Scott (Margie). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Rons Edward, Dyan, Robin, Betty, Laree, Leticia, Luke, Brandy, Don, Trish, Rick, Cindy, Scott, Samantha, David, Anthony, Randall, Sharon, Michelle and Mary Margaret along with a host of great nieces and nephews and even more great great nieces and nephews.
Family will receive guests Saturday, February 11th from 9 am until funeral service starts at 10 am. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, TN.
