Growing up in the Cooper Young neighborhood of Memphis, she attended Peabody, Fairview and was a graduate of Central High School. She met so many lifelong friends in the neighborhood, at school and her church who supported and loved one another through all the happy and also those challenging times that came along.
As a follower of Jesus Christ, she was a longtime active member of her neighborhood church, Galloway Methodist. This is where she met and married the love of her life, Al Caldwell, a Vermonter who was stationed at Second Army Headquarters down the street from the church during World War II. She loved serving beside him there and held many leadership roles, including president of the United Methodist Women and teaching children’s Sunday School, Bible School and the Youth. She also sang in the Choir with her dear friends. Dorothy and Al became members in later years at Colonial Park United Methodist Church where they were readily welcomed. She became fast friends with so many through the Prayer Group and Prayer Shawl Knitting Group, UMW and her Sunday School class. Dorothy was a true Prayer Warrior. She loved the Lord and her family more than anything in life. She studied His word throughout her lifetime and attended Bible Study Fellowship and Community Bible Study for many years.
Dorothy played the piano, knitted, crocheted, played Bridge, Bunko and also enjoyed Bingo with friends in her most recent years. She was a wonderful seamstress and a fabulous cook. Family gatherings, especially surrounding a meal, were her absolute favorite times.
Her family will receive guests Sunday, January 23 from 5pm-7pm at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue Memphis TN and again at 9am, Monday morning until funeral services begin at 10am in the sanctuary at Colonial Park United Methodist Church located at 5330 Park Avenue, Memphis TN.
Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Allen Caldwell; her parents Annie and Ray V. Moseley, Sr. and brother, Ray V. Moseley, Jr. (Mercedes). She is survived by her brother, Robert B. Moseley (Nan) of Atlanta; her cousin, Virginia F. Mahan (Norman) of Houston; her daughters Connie McIntyre (Steve) and Aline Thompson, both of Memphis; grandchildren Nathan Allen Frazier (Ashley), Ann Marie Heaslett (Neal), Melissa “Missy” Litton (David), David W. McKean, Jr. (Kristina), J.T. Thompson (Anna); great grandchildren Ann Louise McKean, David W. “Tripp” McKean III, Samuel Smith McKean, Cache Lukas Frazier, Zoe Regan Frazier, Olivia Ines Frazier, Emma Jane Thompson and Marian Dorothy Litton. She also leaves her loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials in her name may be given to Colonial Park UMC or the organization of the donor’s choice.
