Laura “Charlotte” Comes, 92, of Memphis, TN passed from this life to the next on February 25, 2024 after a several years-long battle with cancer and a life filled with love, family, friends, and faithfulness.
Born in Detroit, MI on September 20, 1931 to parents Charles Frederick Ingram and Laura Corinne Baxter Ingram, Charlotte and her parents moved to Memphis, TN to be closer to extended family when she was two years old. From an early age, Charlotte showed an interest and blossoming talent for the fine arts, including music, dance, and theatre. Even as a child, she sang in the St. Luke’s Methodist Episcopal Church choir and often offered her angelic, contralto voice to solo performances in the praise and worship of her savior Jesus Christ.
On June 19, 1951, she was united in holy marriage with the love of her life, George K. Comes, Jr. Together they had four children: Charles (Chuck), Laura Leigh, and twins Christopher and Mark. Although she had been offered a scholarship to attend Julliard, she declined in order to support George in his ministry as a United Methodist preacher and dedicated her God-given talents to the church. Through their shared years of active and retired ministry, Charlotte sang in many choirs, directed a few, taught kindergarten classes, acted in church musical productions, and offered her deep friendship to the members of the nine churches George served as pastor. Hailing from generations of strong and independent women, Charlotte worked outside of the home, also. She took great pride in her work as office manager for Dr. Robert L. Richardson and his thoracic and cardiovascular medical group.
A lover of nature and animals, especially her granddog Emmett, Charlotte shared her kind heart with all who crossed her path. She enjoyed spending Octobers in Destin, FL and sharing her photographs of the beautiful sunsets. As the sun sets on her life and now she joins the heavenly chorus, she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends who give glory to God for the life and faith of Laura Charlotte Comes.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Corinne Ingram, her husband Rev. George K. Comes, Jr., and her oldest child Chuck Comes. She is survived by her children Laura Hubbard (Clint), Chris Comes (Maggi), and Mark Comes (Meg), as well as her six grandchildren, whom she thought hung the moon: Amanda Hartmann Westmoreland (Adam), Matthew Hartmann, Tucker Comes, Sam Comes, Tyler Comes, and Julia Comes.
A celebration of life and resurrection will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Trinity UMC in Memphis, TN. The family will receive friends at visitation beginning 12:00 pm, with the service to follow at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Trinity UMC or the Church Health Center of Memphis.
