Benton Washington Cox Jr., age 96, of Germantown, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Benton was born in Tupelo, MS on September 3, 1925. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn M. Cox; his parents, Benton Washington Cox, Sr. and Mable Cox; his sister, Dorothy Cox Barlow; his half-brothers, Hammond Cox and Irving Cox.
Ben was a graduate of the Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, MS and a member of Mississippi School for the Deaf Hall of Fame. He was an ordained preacher and he led mission trips to Russia, Ukraine, Hawaii, and Ecuador. He preached all across the country. Ben worked at the Commercial Appeal for 36 years. He enjoyed spending time with his grand and great grandchildren collecting postcards, coin collecting, woodworking and carving.
Continuing his legacy are his children; Pat (Tim) Cox Nickell, Ben (Brenda) Cox III, Steve (Judy) Cox; his sister, Joann (Toulman) Boatwright; his grandchildren, Lisa (Patrick) Nickell Raymaker, Grant Nickell, Clark Nickell, Ashley (Jon) Cox Pollard, Melissa (Dustin) Cox Grace, Sarah Cox, Laura (Jacob) Cox Morgan; his great grandchildren, Lexie Shumate, Garrett and Emma Jones, Brayden Nickell, Clayton Pollard, Ashlynn Pollard, Savannah Grace, Jude Morgan, Simon Morgan and Joanna Morgan.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 2pm until 3pm with services follow at Kirby Woods Baptist Church located at 6325 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Services will be live streamed at kirbywoods.org/live. The interment will be held at Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Rd., Bartlett, TN 38133.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to Memphis Deaf Church / Kirby Woods Deaf Baptist Church.
