Virginia Kirby Thompson of McDonough, formerly of Fayetteville, GA died September 24, 2015. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Thompson grew up in Atlanta and College Park. She was a graduate of Crawford W. Long School of Nursing and the University of Georgia. Her nursing career began at Crawford W. Long Hospital, and she became a member of the nursing school faculty. She took a break from her career to raise a family and returned to nursing at Griffin Spalding Hospital where she worked until her retirement. She was a member of Timberridge Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Kirby, brother, Omer Kirby, and husband, James Oliver Thompson, Jr. She is survived by three children; Mary Ellen Wilson and her husband Randall, Omer Thompson, and Willene Wells and her husband David. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Chad Snow, Britt Snow, Jason Snow, Valerie W. Hicks, Olivia T. Haynie, Anna Thompson; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Haisten funeral Home in McDonough on Sunday, September 27, 2015 – 4:00 – 6:00 PM. A private graveside service will be conducted by The Reverend Fred Young at Camp Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville. For those who wish in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Timberridge Presbyterian Church or The Salvation Army.
