Gladys Carter

Gladys Lister Carter was born in Laurens County, Georgia on January 24, 1928, to the late Charles Edgar Lister and “Evie” Lena Floyd Lister. She was born into a family of seven brothers and two sisters, with two more sisters to follow. From the beginning, she was one of a kind. It was a family in which if you knew one sibling, you would soon know them all. Her family was a major part of her life, and she showed this with her visits, phone calls, cards, and gifts.

Gladys delighted in large family gatherings, some of which she hosted. Adored by her nieces and nephews, they looked forward to her visits. Their usual greeting to her was, “Hello Good Looking!”. When they were younger, the nieces loved her clothes and nails, and her nephews loved her cars. Gladys especially loved a good joke. With her unique gifts of love and laughter, she made everyone know they were special to her. She made everyone feel beautiful or handsome. In later years at the annual Lister women’s retreat, the younger nieces fell in love with her.

She was a devoted wife and mother. She was also the best Gigi. She adored spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved being outside and tending to her flowers in the garden.

Gladys was always supportive of the civic activities in Locust Grove. She was also very involved in the women of the Shrine at Yaarab Temple in Atlanta. She also was a member in the women of the Moose in McDonough and Locust Grove First Baptist Church.

Gladys lived a life full of love, laughter, and joy. She was known for her kind heart and gentle spirit.

In addition to her parents, Gladys is predeceased by her husband William (Billy) Lanier Carter, daughter Terri Carter Cantrell, daughter Cindy Carter Holder, sisters Kimper Lister Knight and Deloras Lister Tucker, brothers Wilfred “Fred” Franklin Lister, Charles Edgar Lister Jr., Dewell Andre “D.A.” Lister, Johnny Eugene Lister, Alva Quinton Lister, and Croal Daniel Lister.

She is survived by her granddaughter Katie Cantrell (Joseph) Drake and great-grandchildren Addison, Brooklyn, and Emersyn all of Dallas, GA.

Gladys is also survived by her son-in-law Warren Emory Holder and grandchildren Tammy (Buster) Cook, Warren (Dana) Carter Holder, Ellen (Colton) Cook Nunn, Allison Cook, John Carter Holder, and Timothy Warren Holder all of Locust Grove.

She also survived by her sisters Nell L. Newcomer of Macon, Janice L. Preston of Gray, and many nieces and nephews.

Her graveside service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Locust Grove Cemetery, Locust Grove, Georgia. Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough is in charge of the arrangements.
