Betty Jo Slater Hill, 91, died 9 August 2020, in Jonesboro, GA. Betty was born 12 April 1929, to Hugh E. and Lavina Bowman Slater in Jackson County, AL. She grew up with eight brothers and sisters on a farm in Flat Rock, AL. She attended high school at the Berry School in Rome, GA, where she once met Henry Ford who was a benefactor for the Berry school. Betty earned her undergraduate degree at Jacksonville State University where she met her future husband, Lloyd Hill of Lamar county AL They settled in Anniston, AL where they ran a dental lab together for many years. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Anniston and were active workers in the church's local outreach ministry. They had two children, Jeff and Ann. Betty returned to Jacksonville State in the early 1970's to earn her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Calhoun County until she retired in 1990. In later years she moved to Chattanooga, TN to be closer to her siblings. When her health began to decline in 2017, she moved to the Atlanta area to be closer to her daughter. She passed away Sunday and was reunited with her beloved family members who preceded her in death: parents Hugh and Lavina Slater, and brothers Bill, Bryce, and Doug Slater. She is survived by her children Jeff Hill of Austin, TX, Ann Thomas of McDonough, GA, grand daughter Kate Thomas of McDonough, GA. Surviving brothers Fred Slater of Ringgold, GA, Dan Slater of Flat Rock, AL, and John Bruce Slater of Springfield, IL. Surviving sisters Dora Atkins of Ft Payne, AL, and Clara Schofield of Flat Rock, AL. A memorial service will be held Friday 14, August at 2pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Hixon, TN, Steve Schofield officiating.
