Rose Yen (age 93) passed away peacefully on June 9, 2024 at Cedar Living in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.
Rose was born on August 16, 1930 in Mumbai (Bombay), India. She was the third child of the late Yen Sui and late Li Shum. Her sisters Kim Peng and Jean Wong, and brother David Yan predeceased her.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Ying Hsi) Chang who passed away in 1969.
Rose will be sadly missed by daughters Lena (Eugene) Tham, Lisa Appleton, Lilena (Uma) Rajeshwar, and Lilisa (Harry) Hall. She was the beloved grandmother of Caelisa Appleton, and Julian (Dara), Freya and Hannah Rajeshwar. She was the great-grandmother of Haven, Calvin and Elliot Rajeshwar.
In her early life Rose was a hair stylist and a tutor to elementary school kids. After Rose moved to the U.S., she worked with her brother at his Chinese restaurant in Chicago. She later worked for several years at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. After retirement, Rose moved to Mayfield Heights.
Rose was fiercely independent and took daily walks for years. She remained independent until the age of 91. Rose loved basketball and could hold her own when discussing basketball stats. Her favorite team was the Chicago Bulls, and her favorite player was Michael Jordan. She was a fabulous cook, enjoyed mystery novels and never failed to tune in daily to her favorite game shows – Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right and Jeopardy. The family thanks the staff of Cedar Living for the love, care and compassion they bestowed on Rose in her final years. The family also thanks Cypress Hospice for their care, support and comfort during Rose’s final days. Rose will be laid to rest at Knollwood Cemetery in a private ceremony.
