MARTHA CAROL ROWAN (nee Wilson) of Chesterland, OH, passed away May 20, 2017. Martha was born on May 25, 1932 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from Western College for Women before she began her teaching career. She married her husband Rudolph J. Rowan and was married for 44 years before he passed away in 1998. She earned a Masters Degrees from Kent State University and John Carroll University. As a teacher, Martha was well-known for her love of reading and her ability to inspire that love in her students, friends, and family.
Martha worked with students for more than 50 years, continuing to work with community and school organizations even after her retirement. She worked with her local school PTAs and was an active member of PEO which provided scholarships and support for students interested in education. She was an avid dog obedience trainer and enjoyed competing her dogs in shows throughout the area. Addtionally, Martha was long-time, well-loved member of her church, Community Church of Chesterland (UCC).
Survived by her sister, Mary Wilson Woodworth (David), her two sons, James Rowan (Janell) and John Rowan (Andrea), Martha leaves behind a loving family and many cherished friends. She has 4 granddaughters, Rebecca Rackley, Catherine Rowan, Elizabeth Rowan, and Evelyn Rowan. Martha’s family and community will miss her and will remember the lasting impact she had on the lives of those she met.
